The Telenor PhD Scholarship in Network Economics at KSE/KEI

The mission of the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) and the Kyiv Economics Institute (KEI) is to create a new generation of economists and to create a sustainable local capacity for economics research and education. Telenor has decided to support this mission by offering a PhD scholarship in Network Economics. The chosen candidate will play an important role in building Ukrainian and international competence in this very important field of economics.

Something more about Network Economics:

  • Industries like the telecommunications, banking, financing, insurance and transportation industry are different from other industries in that value is created by connecting customers. In such case, the value of a service for a customer typically depends on who and how many others can be reached. Such industries are ‘network’ industries and are studied in the framework of Network Economics.
  • A specific aspect of these industries is that there are scale economies on both the demand and the supply side of the economy. Because of these scale economies, most of these industries are heavily regulated. At the same time, these industries represent a large, and growing part of the economy.

If you want to find more information on network, you can find lots of websites dedicated to Network Economics on the Internet.

First there is Hal Varian’s website. Varian is one of the leading scholars in Network Economics. He is the author of ‘Information Rules’ and compiled a website with links about Network Economics.

Another good source is Stan Liebowitz and his book ‘Rethinking the Network Economy’. Also his website contains many interesting links.

The website of Nicolas Economides is entirely dedicated to Network Economics.

Oz Shy has written a very accessible textbook on ‘The Economics of Network Industries.’
